A 60-year-old marathoner from New York City put together some fitness tips for those of us in the Baby Boomer set.

Elie Hirschfeld, who makes his living in the Manhattan real estate market, has completed 75 triathlons. According to his press agent, he was the oldest competitor in the Israman Ironman Distance Triathlon, the one he’s done most recently. His 11th marathon will be the New York City event this summer.

Tips from Elie Hirschfeld:

1. Choose a sport or activity that you like. This is the easiest way to keep committed.

2. Cross-train. This alleviates boredom, keeps interest up and helps work out more of the body.

3. Exercise moderately. This may seem counterintuitive but by not overdoing it, it’s easier to keep interest up and avoid burnout.

4. Set a goal. It could be anything from running in a race to doing 50 sit-ups in two minutes. Whatever it may be, goals help keep focus and commitment.

5. Avoid injury. This is helped if you exercise moderately, stretch out, check in with a doctor occasionally, and are careful.

6. Keep at it. This is the hardest part, but you just have to find an incentive. Remind yourself why you work out in the first place. Vow never to return to unhealthy habits.

7. Take pride in what you accomplish.
